Zeiss Microscope with Heating
and Cooling Stage
Optical microscopy is available in RESPEC’s petrographic/petrofabric laboratory
using two Zeiss optical petrographic microscopes. One is a photomicroscope
equipped with an internal 35-mm camera and a camera attachment on the upper
tube for use with a second camera. The photomicroscope is also equipped with a
universal stage and a mercury light source for fluorescent work. The second
photomicroscope is of a modular design with a stable base and large working
platform that accommodates a heating/cooling stage capable of maintaining
temperatures between -196°C and +7OO°C (-320°F to +1,29O"F). Both instruments
are equipped for transmitted or reflected light microscopy. Lenses interchange
between the microscopes and can achieve the highest magnification possible in
optical work. An automatic point counter and mechanical stage for section
translation can be attached to either microscope. Wet chemistry and X-Ray
diffraction mineralogy of rock samples can also be performed through RESPEC
subcontractors.
