The three laboratories are supported by on-site facilities designed

Preparation Equipment
specifically for preparation of test specimens, storage of rock samples/core,
and calibration of data acquisition instruments. RESPEC’s specimen preparation
shop supplies specimens for testing and pre- and posttest analyses. The shop
contains a vertical milling machine, a precision surface grinder, lathes,

cut-off and slab saws, and specimen sealing equipment. RESPEC’s well-trained
technicians have produced hundreds of standard cylindrical specimens with
diameters to 10 cm and lengths to 25 cm and special hollow cylinder specimens
having an outside diameter of 30 cm, a wall thickness of 2.5 cm, and an overall
length of 60 cm.
Core storage facilities are available for segregating incoming core, prepared
specimens, and tested specimens from other activities. Core storage is
controlled by a formal rock sample management plan using a computerized core
inventory system and numerically identified physical bin locations for easy
access and rapid specimen tracking.
RESPEC’s dedication to acquiring high-quality accurate test data is
reflected in our on-site metrology laboratory that houses standards for use
during in-house calibrations of measurement equipment. The metrology laboratory
contains transfer standards for force, pressure, temperature, dimensional
measurements, voltage, and electrical resistance. These standards are
periodically recertified and are directly traceable to standards at the
National Institute of Standards and Technology.
