RESPEC scientists and engineers conduct holistic and comprehensive physical,
biological, and chemical evaluations. We identify sources of pollution and
their impacts; develop practical, cost-effective goals and strategies; and
assess progress toward goals after implementation. We design best management
practices (BMPs), including structures, practices, and procedures, to achieve
the goals. Modeling and statistical analyses are part of the many tools RESPEC
uses to enhance the understanding of the watershed process and to enhance our
client’s decision-making process. They are useful in quantifying contributors,
including point sources for industry and municipal effluent, urban runoff,
agricultural lands, and forested lands. Historic and geospatial data regression
and nonparametric analysis are used to develop an understanding of the critical
processes within the watershed. Models can be developed using existing
programs. These programs are calibrated and validated using historic data. The
models can then be exercised to predict future conditions and test
effectiveness of BMPs. RESPEC takes full advantage of emerging technology,
models, geospatial information, and hardware to perform cost-effective,
credible, and easy-to-understand analysis of the watershed. In addition to our
in-house programs, our engineers use public domain and commercial programs,
including
Arc View,
Arc Info,
BASINS,
FLUX,
BATHTUB,
QUAL 2E,
SWAT,
HSPF,
HEC-Ras,
Hec-HMS,
MathCAD, and
MINITAB. More importantly, RESPEC’s engineers have the necessary
education and experience to efficiently and successfully use these tools and
know their limitations. Watershed scale projects cross many political and
jurisdictional boundaries. To ensure effective planning and coordination, we
help develop and implement avenues for stakeholders (government agencies,
municipalities, agricultural interests, other water users, and citizens’
groups) to develop constructive relationships.
