Geothermal Geomechanics Project

A team of researchers from RESPEC (lead organization), the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory will conduct a 3-year, multifaceted research project aimed at the development of a directional cooling-induced fracturing technology for near-wellbore stress elimination in geothermal reservoirs. If the technology is successfully implemented, operators should be able to economically recover a continuous profile of the full stress tensor from the first hole they drill in the geothermal field.
