RESPEC Engineer Tyler Artz Wins SDES Young Engineer of the Year Award

Tyler Artz

In February 2021, RESPEC engineer Tyler Artz received the South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) Black Hills Chapter Young Engineer of the Year Award, which allowed him to advance as a nominee for the SDES statewide title. Tyler has now been named SDES Young Engineer of the Year—a win that could potentially lead him to a national nomination.

SDES advocates for engineering practices that advance both community welfare and the engineering profession. To be considered for the SDES chapter and statewide awards, a candidate must display a well-rounded record of professional experience and community outreach.

“These awards encourage engineers to broaden their horizons,” says Tyler. “It’s not all about left-brain thinking and technical work. There has to be community involvement. Getting involved in the community links projects with people.” Tyler participates in various community efforts, from sitting on the Board of Directors with the South Dakota Mines Alumni Association to signing up individuals and businesses to volunteer with Rapid City Summer Nights, a local summer-long music festival.

Awards like these often inspire engineers to do even more. For Tyler, this award reinforces his belief that engineers should pursue relationships with their communities through volunteer efforts. He is excited to see RESPEC employees leading the way.

“RESPEC now has three engineers who have won this award,” says Tyler. “It just goes to show that RESPEC produces quality engineers who blend good work with community involvement.”
