Anna Nelson, PE, Named SDES Young Engineer of the Year
Excellence in engineering. Leadership in action. A well-earned honor.Â
Anna Nelson has been named the South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) Young Engineer of the Year, joining a long line of RESPEC engineers who have received this honor. The award recognizes technical innovation, leadership, and community impact—qualities that Anna exemplifies every day.Â
A mechanical engineer specializing in water and wastewater systems, Anna has played a key role in designing critical infrastructure solutions that strengthen communities. She was a key contributor to the South Dakota West River Regional Water and Wastewater Study, which brought together municipalities, utilities, and stakeholders to develop solutions for water sustainability.Â
Beyond her technical expertise, Anna has supported STEM outreach, engaging with students at career fairs, engineering festivals, and STEM events to inspire the next generation. Her passion for engineering was sparked in high school when she met an engineer working on global water initiatives, an experience that continues to fuel her work today.Â
Anna’s dedication to excellence, problem-solving, and leadership has defined her career. She holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering, is a licensed PE in South Dakota, and has multi-state project management experience. She is also a graduate of the ACEC Emerging Leaders Class, a program designed to prepare engineers for leadership and firm management.Â
Her advice for young engineers? “Find a field you’re passionate about—because when you care deeply about your work, you’ll naturally push it to the next level.”Â
Anna’s achievement is part of a long tradition at RESPEC, where engineers are encouraged to push boundaries, lead with impact, and shape the future of their industries. Her recognition reflects not only her own dedication and talent but also the culture of excellence that defines our team.Â
Congratulations, Anna! Â
