Rebuilding a Flood-Resilient Fire Station
Built to Stay Standing—and Serving—After the Storm
When Hurricane Ian struck Florida’s coast in 2022, Sanibel’s fire stations suffered severe damage, which disrupted emergency response at a critical moment for the community. The reconstruction of Fire Station 172 needed to restore essential services while reducing the risk of future interruptions in a hurricane-prone environment.
RESPEC’s civil engineering team supported the district through development permitting and civil site design, focusing on the fundamentals that determine whether a facility can function during and after major storm events. Thoughtful water management, resilient utility systems, and site design aligned with local and state requirements helped set the foundation for a station built to withstand flooding and extreme weather.
Following the demolition of the original facility, the new station was constructed with elevated living quarters to mitigate flood risk and maintain operational continuity during hurricanes. The design reflects lessons learned from Hurricane Ian, translating experience into practical, constructable solutions that balance resilience with long-term maintainability. The project also supports a broader district-wide effort to strengthen emergency infrastructure, with planning underway for future station reconstructions across Sanibel.

Station 172 reopened in 2025 as a modern, hurricane-resilient facility designed to protect first responders, support uninterrupted emergency services, and reduce the long-term costs of recovery after major storms. For the Sanibel community and its first responders, the rebuilt station strengthens readiness, safety, and resilience for years to come.
