Turning a Depleted Gas Field into 24/7 Renewable Power in Northern British Columbia

Energy Dependence in a Remote, Cold Region

The groundbreaking Tu Deh-Kah (TDK) geothermal project is being developed to transform how energy is produced in one of British Columbia’s most remote and frigid regions. Fort Nelson’s isolation and harsh climate have historically driven heavy reliance on fossil fuels, resulting in greenhouse gas emissions far higher than the provincial average. By harnessing geothermal heat from deep underground, the project aims to generate clean, dependable electricity while capturing excess heat for economic uses that support long-term community resilience and establish the region as a geothermal hub.

Subsurface Engineering and Informed Tradeoffs

A defining feature of the project is the presence of natural gas within the geothermal reservoir. The gas complicates fluid flow and power generation; however, it also offers significant value. RESPEC is leading the subsurface engineering on a team that is evaluating the best approach to developing this resource through innovative wellfield modeling, design, and completions. Repurposing a depleted gas reservoir for geothermal energy not only reduces environmental impact but also sets a precedent for other regions with similar subsurface conditions.

A Model for the Energy Transition

Tu Deh-Kah is demonstrating how legacy hydrocarbon assets can be transformed into renewable energy infrastructure. By targeting 24/7 baseload geothermal power with opportunities to use excess heat locally, the project supports long-term energy security, emissions reduction, and economic resilience under Indigenous leadership.
