As more projects move from exploration to feasibility studies and permitting, mining companies need practical ways to control costs, reduce risk, and keep momentum.

Idaho’s mining industry is gaining momentum.

Historical mining districts are attracting renewed attention, developers are reevaluating former mines, and new gold and silver projects are advancing quickly—with some even fully permitted and under construction. This is a historic opportunity to build on Idaho’s mining legacy and shape its next generation of operations.

“Idaho is seeing a surge in mine development projects, including new mines and brownfield restarts,” says Ben Haugen, Business Development Lead for Mining at RESPEC. “We understand what it takes to open a new mine or restart an existing one in Idaho, and how critical cost and schedule are to the companies advancing those projects.”

Over the past 6 years, RESPEC has supported 27 projects in Idaho, including 15 mining projects. That experience spans technical, environmental, and planning challenges and offers insight into the realities of advancing mining projects in the state. These realities are especially important for junior mining companies, which must balance spending with outside investment while generating the information needed to maintain investor confidence. Technical studies must deliver reliable results without requiring more time or resources than a project can reasonably support.

One example is the DeLamar and Florida Mountain gold-silver project in Owyhee County. RESPEC’s resource geology, mine engineering, and geotechnical teams collaborated to support planning and technical evaluations for the site. The work demonstrated that early cross-disciplinary collaboration can help teams make better use of available data and reach informed decisions sooner. The project also reinforces a broader lesson: Technical investments deliver more value when disciplines connect early.

Although mining expertise remains central to many Idaho projects, successful development often requires a broader range of skills. Environmental specialists, water resource professionals, geospatial experts, and drone technology teams frequently support mining clients alongside engineers and geologists. Bringing those capabilities together helps project teams evaluate conditions more thoroughly, communicate more effectively with stakeholders, and make informed decisions throughout the project life cycle.

“When geology, geotechnical engineering, and mine planning work together from the start, developers get more value from every dollar invested in drilling and technical studies,” Ben says. “That helps teams make informed decisions sooner and keep projects moving forward.”

Sometimes the solution is straightforward. Geotechnical testing can be integrated into exploration drilling programs already underway, which enables multiple teams to collect critical information simultaneously. Right-sizing technical work for a project’s current stage helps preserve capital while keeping a clear path toward future milestones.

Technical coordination is only part of the equation. Permitting and local relationships also influence project success. Consistent communication with regulators, tribal nations, and local communities can help mining companies understand concerns, build trust, and explain the potential benefits a project may offer.

Idaho’s next chapter in mining will be written where a long mining history meets new opportunities. The companies that succeed will be those that apply expertise early, understand local conditions, and make thoughtful decisions at every stage. With proficiency spanning mining, water resources, environmental services, and geospatial technologies, RESPEC helps Idaho mining companies turn opportunity into progress.
