Medical Waste Facility Design and Permitting

Article

The Challenge

EARTHRES was approached by Sharps Compliance, Inc., a leading provider of comprehensive waste management solutions, to lead the medical waste facility design and permitting efforts for their new medical waste processing and warehouse distribution facility in northeast Pennsylvania.

“Thank you so much for all your efforts in making this happen. Can’t say enough nice things about you and your firm.”
-David P. Tusa, CEO & President, Sharps Compliance, Inc.

The Solution

Facility Design

EARTHRES was responsible for structural and mechanical engineering design to make certain the existing facility would be in compliance with all required federal, state and local regulations to accept and process medical waste.  This included the installation of an autoclave, boiler, wastewater interceptor and shredder for proper sterilization of medical waste before transferring to offsite disposal.

Permitting

Through a reputation for quality work, proper project management, and due diligence, with this project being no exception, EARTHRES was able to prove the facility redesign is in compliance with the required regulations.  These efforts successfully earned the client a permit from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Waste Management for the processing of medical waste at its 40,000 sq. ft. building.

Large industrial facility interior with concrete floors, yellow safety railings, a horizontal green cylindrical tank, red barrels, and visible pipes and ladders. Bright lighting and high ceiling with exposed beams.

Optimized Process

Now permitted as both a medical waste treatment facility (utilizing an autoclave) and as a transfer station for medical, pharmaceutical and trace chemotherapy waste, this is a significant milestone for the client.   Sharps Compliance is now able to more cost-effectively and efficiently process up to 82 tons of waste per day from their eleven–state northeastern route-based and mailback customers.  The facility will also serve as a distribution center for their mailback solutions.

The Results

Sharps Compliance is able to cost-effectively process up to 82 tons of medical waste per day from their 11 state Northeastern route-based and mailback customers and serve as a distribution center for their mailback solutions.
