When Vision Outpaced Conventional Structure

Artist Dale Lamphere envisioned a sculpture that would do more than span a river. The Arc of Dreams was meant to capture the moment between idea and action, the pause before commitment. Translating that idea into a structure suspended high above the Big Sioux River introduced immediate questions of safety, durability, and feasibility. Failure was not an option in a busy downtown public space.

Scale, Exposure, and No Room for Error

The sculpture consists of two independent stainless-steel arches cantilevered from opposite riverbanks. Together they stretch nearly the length of a football field, stopping just short of one another to form a 15-foot gap suspended roughly 60 to 75 feet above the water. The structure is fully exposed to wind, temperature swings, and long-term environmental loads, while appearing light, fluid, and dazzling by design.

RESPEC staff worked closely with the artist to preserve his intent and ensure structural performance. Each arch is built from three telescoping stainless-steel pipe sections, stiffened with tubular rings, plates, and ribbon-like elements that provide strength without visual weight. Inspired by prairie grass, the design allows controlled flexibility rather than rigid resistance, enabling the structure to absorb wind and movement while maintaining stability.

A Landmark That Holds Its Line

Completed in 2018, the Arc of Dreams stands as a defining landmark in downtown Sioux Falls. The structure safely performs under real environmental conditions while preserving the openness and tension central to the artist’s vision. The Arc demonstrates how careful engineering can support public art at extreme scale without compromising expression, turning an abstract idea into a lasting civic presence.
