Integrated Systems That Make Landfill Gas Work
Landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) projects succeed only when collection, control, and power generation systems operate as one. For this project, RESPEC supported the design and delivery of an LFGTE system that connected an existing enclosed flare to a new 10-megawatt power plant. The objective was to move gas safely and reliably, protect system performance, and meet regulatory requirements without disrupting active landfill operations.
The team designed a 500-foot, high-capacity landfill gas pipeline system rated for approximately 4,200 standard cubic feet per minute. The scope included an 18-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) gas transmission line, a 12-inch gas-return line, and a robust condensate management system with two pumping stations and an in-line knockout tank. RESPEC also integrated new controls with the existing gas collection and flare systems, ensuring stable operation across variable flow and operating conditions.
Beyond technical design, RESPEC delivered full bid and construction packages, supported contractor selection, and provided construction quality assurance and on-site engineering support. The team also completed ongoing engineering certification to document proper installation and successful startup, closing the loop from concept through operation.
Proven Performance, Recognized Results
The completed $9.2 million system now generates renewable energy equivalent to powering approximately 6,300 homes annually while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its performance and delivery earned national recognition as Project of the Year from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program, a clear validation of integrated design, careful permitting, and disciplined construction oversight.
