Bering Street carries much of Nome’s everyday movement—residents heading to work, deliveries reaching local businesses, and visitors navigating the historic downtown along Front Street to 5th Avenue. Over the years, harsh weather, poor drainage, and instability have left the roadway and sidewalks in serious disrepair. Eight-foot shoulders were deteriorating, settlement near utility lines created safety hazards, and pedestrian access fell significantly short of ADA standards.

Recognizing the importance of reliable and accessible infrastructure, RESPEC partnered with the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities to restore and extend the life of the critical route and align with the Nome Comprehensive Plan to improve drainage and protect the city’s transportation systems for the future decades. Early public engagement shaped the design so it reflected the needs of drivers, pedestrians, and nearby businesses, while maintaining access to essential destinations and improving overall safety.
