RESPEC performed an analysis of an undersized pillar with an unfavorable joint orientation that had been damaged during bench blasting. The pillar was located along the main travelway of the mine (a critical location) where a ramp was being driven to a lower level. RESPEC’s analysis included conducting a field inspection where measurements were obtained and performing a detailed numerical model that accurately replicated the actual conditions. The analysis indicated that the undersized pillar did not pose a global stability threat to the mine but that the upper portion of the pillar was a ground-control hazard. Bolting recommendations were provided and rock-mechanics instruments with hazard lighting were installed to notify workers if any movement occurred along the joint. Mining has advanced down the ramp to the lower level without incident.
