Engineering a Better Future: RESPEC’s Overhaul of Breckenridge’s Outdated Standards

2019–2021
Breckenridge, Colorado
Town of Breckenridge, Colorado

The Town of Breckenridge’s Engineering Standards were outdated and did not meet current engineering best practices or environmental regulations. To address this, RESPEC was contracted to update the standards, including water quality and sediment control standards, street standards, storm drainage criteria and standards, and construction specifications. The revised standards also included standard permit forms, checklists, and forms for enforcing the new standards.

RESPEC led multiple review meetings to address specific issues in the drainage criteria, such as removing criteria from the Town Code, consolidating all the engineering criteria into a single document, and establishing post-construction inspection and acceptance protocols. Stolfus & Associates, Inc. was a subconsultant to RESPEC and provided additional sections on Traffic Impact Studies and Street Standards. The project schedule and budget were increased because of a change in the Scope of Work, which also included updating the Town of Breckenridge’s Construction Specifications and Standard Details.

With this project, RESPEC provided valuable guidance and resources to ensure compliance with current standards, maximum safety and efficiency, and a more sustainable future for the community.
