Honoring Service and Enhancing Community

Transforming a Landmark for Generations

Veterans Memorial Park is a cornerstone of Fairbanks—a space for remembrance, community events, and everyday enjoyment. The park needed thoughtful modernization that respected its memorial purpose while better serving veterans and the broader public. RESPEC led the park renovation as prime consultant, guiding the project from early site design through bidding and construction administration.

Working under a tight procurement schedule, RESPEC delivered an accelerated design that met deadlines without compromising quality. The improvements include a modern pavilion design replacing the aging gazebo, an open plaza for gatherings and ceremonies, ADA-compliant public spaces with pathways connecting to surrounding streets, and enhanced landscaping and tree replacement for sustainability. Our multidisciplinary team integrated civil, survey, geotechnical, structural, and electrical engineering with landscape architecture and cost estimating to ensure a buildable, code-compliant, and fundable design.

Community Driven, Locally Supported

Public engagement shaped the project. Borough-led reviews and a well-attended public meeting in summer 2024 informed updates to circulation, landscaping, and accessibility, ensuring the park reflects community priorities. Local organizations rallied behind the vision, with the Kiwanis Club of Fairbanks donating $60,000 toward the new stage and others funding additional community amenities.

Built Right, From Paper to Pavement

Construction administration is key to success. By staying engaged during construction, RESPEC safeguarded quality, safety, and design intent, catching issues early and avoiding costly rework on a highly visible public project. The result is a park that will serve Fairbanks for decades.
