Delivering High-Capacity Brine Disposal Under Regulatory and Production Pressure

Disposal Capacity Became Critical at the Allan Mine

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, now Nutrien, needed a high-capacity brine disposal well to support operations at its Allan potash mine while meeting strict provincial requirements. RESPEC led the project from permitting through design, drilling, and testing, coordinating each phase to manage risk and keep the system aligned with operational demands.

RESPEC secured all required approvals from the Saskatchewan government and land management agencies and completed a detailed geological investigation of the Deadwood Formation to support the disposal application. After permits were issued, the team coordinated material procurement, mobilized field services, and supervised drilling in accordance with provincial regulations.

Testing Exposed Injection Limits

Initial testing identified low injection rates. Rather than proceed with constrained performance, RESPEC applied targeted stimulation techniques based on formation response. Post-stimulation results increased injection capacity to one of the highest brine injection rates achieved at Saskatchewan potash mines.

Drawing on prior disposal well workover experience, the team also addressed known failure points common to brine disposal systems. Those measures reduced operational risk and strengthened long-term reliability.

Stimulation Restored Capacity and Secured Disposal

The project resulted in a regulator-approved, high-capacity disposal well that exceeded initial performance expectations. The increased injection capacity supported ongoing operations, reduced operational risk associated with brine management, and established a compliant, durable disposal solution for long-term use at one of Saskatchewan’s major potash producers.
