RESPEC planned and oversaw the field efforts and geotechnical studies for a preliminary geotechnical evaluation of a 16-acre parcel that will be the home of the future Petersburg Medical Clinic in Petersburg, Alaska. The primary goal of the preliminary geotechnical evaluation was to determine the thickness of organics and depth to a dense, suitable bearing layer across the property. We accomplished this evaluation using a combination of excavated test pits and hand probing combined with field GIS data collection. RESPEC coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that the exploration activities fell under a Nationwide Permit. Timber matting allowed the excavator to safely travel across the muskeg and prevent damage to the muskeg. RESPEC prepared a geotechnical report that presented all the data collected in the field and laboratory and provided preliminary recommendations for earthworks and foundations, as well as recommendations for future more detailed geotechnical studies after the preliminary site plan has been developed.
