The City of Soldotna, Alaska selected RESPEC to develop a Safe Routes to School plan for six local schools. Each of the schools had unique challenges to improving the walking and biking atmosphere, which meant that a one-size-fits-all plan would not work. The RESPEC team worked closely with the City and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District to identify issues, develop practical solutions, and ensure that the Safe Routes Plan complemented the City’s Comprehensive Plan and its Trails and Parks Master Plan.

Public outreach included newsletters, social media announcements, presence at a trail event, an open house, and a work session with the Planning Commission. The plan was unanimously approved by the City Council and was implemented.
