Creating a Shared, Actionable Vision That Balances Access, Stewardship, and Long-Term Community Benefit

Understanding the Site and Its Significance

Unaatuq Hot Springs is more than a destination. Located northeast of Nome, the site holds deep cultural significance, sensitive environmental resources, and growing interest as a recreational and economic asset for the region. RESPEC partnered with Kawerak, Inc. and Unaatuq, LLC to help translate those values into a clear master plan—one that supports responsible access and opportunity while protecting what makes the place unique.

Our multidisciplinary team of planners, engineers, environmental scientists, and cultural resource specialists worked together from the outset. The process began with a thorough review of existing studies, landownership and constraints, and adjacent uses, followed by on-site investigations to address data gaps. Fieldwork included a boundary, control, and topographic survey; wetland delineation; infrastructure assessments; and observation of current recreational use.

The planning effort centered on collaboration. Regular engagement with the Unaatuq Board of Directors and close coordination with Kawerak staff ensured that community priorities—particularly environmental stewardship and cultural respect—were reflected throughout the project. The resulting master plan lays out phased, cost-informed concepts for lodging and staff housing, transportation and utility upgrades, expanded hot springs amenities, and agricultural features such as a heated greenhouse. The plan also addresses preservation of historic mission buildings and integration of renewable geothermal energy.

A Roadmap for Sustainable Growth

The Unaatuq Hot Springs Master Plan provides a practical framework for decision-making that balances recreation, conservation, and economic opportunity. It positions the site for resilient, long-term stewardship while supporting benefits that extend beyond the property to the broader community.
