Modernizing a Critical Fairbanks Corridor For Safer, Smoother Everyday Travel

Where Daily Travel Meets Safer Design

University Avenue carries the daily rhythm of Fairbanks, Alaska, linking neighborhoods, schools, and commercial centers across a 2-mile, north-south span. Working with the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF), RESPEC designed comprehensive roadway and infrastructure upgrades for this stretch to improve safety, mobility, and compliance with modern requirements.

The design transformed the existing four-lane undivided roadway into a divided corridor with a raised median, 12-foot lanes, and widened sidewalks. Left-turn lanes were added at non-signalized intersections to keep traffic moving and reduce collision points. More than 100 right-of-way acquisitions were coordinated to support the expansion, and all sidewalks were reconstructed to meet current ADA accessibility guidelines.

Below the surface, RESPEC addressed extensive utility and drainage needs, relocating underground and overhead utilities, upgrading storm drainage systems, and coordinating with multiple providers to ensure uninterrupted service. The result is an integrated corridor design that accommodates growth while maintaining operational reliability.

Results Built for Reliability

The upgraded University Avenue creates safer conditions for drivers and pedestrians alike, reduces congestion, and modernizes essential infrastructure to meet current DOT&PF and ADA standards. With construction phased to minimize disruption, the $90 million project strengthens the city’s transportation network and supports the city’s long-term mobility and development goals.
