MedCert Express

Simplifying the process for reporting the results of commercial drivers’ medical certification exams through MedCert Express.

Idaho Transportation Department and 65 participating physicians

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) needed a solution to streamline the process of reporting the results of commercial drivers’ medical certification exams, filling out certified medical cards for the drivers, and filing them with state and federal agencies. Working with the ITD, RESPEC staff developed MedCert Express, which is a web-based program that electronically transfers that data from the examining doctors’ offices directly to the ITD—at no cost to the state of Idaho. The success of the innovative and beneficial MedCert Express program won a 2015 Trailblazer Award from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) for the ITD.

Medical examiners nationwide who register with MedCert Express pay a small fee to enter commercial drivers’ medical card data into the system or to have RESPEC enter the data for them. The information is sent directly to the given state’s transportation department, and RESPEC enters the data onto the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website. This process reduces transcription errors and saves time and trouble for the examiners, the commercial driver’s license (CDL) holder, and the authorities. To date, 65 physicians have signed on with MedCert Express.
