Seppala Road Drive Upgrades

2017–ongoing
Nome, Alaska
AKDOT&PF

RESPEC designed improvements to 1.5 miles of roadway that serves as the main connection between the airport and downtown Nome, Alaska. We developed existing conditions using drone photogrammetry with a traditional survey. Then, we restored the pavement structure, improved intersections, replaced aging culverts, replaced guardrail, and repaired an embankment that had settled from thawing permafrost and consolidation of subgrade materials. RESPEC also raised the embankment to prevent roadway overtopping during storm surges and replaced 6- and 7-foot-diameter culverts with a single 10-foot-diameter culvert to improve fish passage and increase tidal exchange.
