Senior Geomechanical Engineer

Job Description: RESPEC is a professional consulting and services company that specializes in applying engineering principles and innovative technologies to solve our clients’ most challenging problems. RESPEC is actively seeking a motivated and talented professional for a Senior Geomechanical Engineer position in our Geomechanics group. The location of the position is negotiable and may be based at one of our existing offices, or be performed remotely given suitable qualifications.
This position requires demonstrated working knowledge of advanced engineering principles and business practices to successfully plan and execute a diverse range of geotechnical projects. Projects may include structural, hydrogeological, and thermal analyses of underground excavations; field investigations of surface and subsurface mining problems; hydrogeological testing and analysis; slope stability, subsidence and other conventional geotechnical analyses; design and assessment of ground-support systems, installation of rock mechanics and hydrogeological instrumentation, and analysis of measurement data. The senior engineer will be responsible for the complete life of projects—from proposal through successful execution within schedule and budget under limited supervision of management staff. The position will include managing the work of other engineers, analysts, or technicians assigned to their projects and fulfilling the role of mentor for less experienced professionals. The senior engineer is often responsible for multiple projects at one time, requiring well-developed time management skills and the ability to independently prioritize competing project demands while balancing business objectives and client expectations. This position will demand implementing industry best practices consistently in project management and exceptional communication skills. The position will also require a strong working knowledge of modern computer-aided engineering (CAE) software programs, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, and computer programming in a standardized language; specifically, as their use applies to numerical modeling in geoengineering applications.
The senior engineer will be responsible for marketing and business development activities to grow revenue, strengthen client relations, and contribute to achieving business unit objectives. The responsibilities will include contributing to advancing industry knowledge by consistently participating in professional organizations related to their field. Because our projects encompass a diverse spectrum of engineering disciplines, the senior engineer will provide interdisciplinary expertise and exemplify continuous professional development.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor of science degree in mechanical, civil, geological/geotechnical, or mining engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with 10–20 years of related engineering experience and a strong background in rock mechanics. Advanced degrees are preferred. The candidate must have proven interpersonal skills and excellent technical communication skills (both written and oral) and be fluent in English. The candidate must have advanced project management skills and the desire to mentor less experienced professionals. The candidate must also have working knowledge in modern software programs for professional office activities (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet calculations, and email). Additional qualifications include the following:
- Advanced working knowledge of mechanical behavior of geological materials
- Experience in materials testing and constitutive models of geomaterials
- Strong field experience at multiple mining operations
- Experience in working with various types of ground-support systems
- Strong working knowledge of CAE software programs for engineering applications
- Professional engineer licensure in good standing
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) 40-hour training.
Compensation: Salary depends on experience and expertise.
